MLK Jr. Weekend Adventures at Pretty PowerSports

Updated: Feb 3

A Busy Weekend in Metro Detroit

MLK Jr. weekend was a bustling time for us at Pretty PowerSports. The long weekend had a lot going on in the Metro Detroit area. Saturday featured Winterfest, hosted by 4Fest Events at Holly Oaks ORV Park. On Sunday, we attended the Detroit Autoshow and Ford Racing Days at Michigan Central.

Winterfest

To kick off the day, my Jeep decided it needed a new battery. This caused a delay, as it wouldn't start when I tried to warm it up. I took the truck to O'Reilly's while my boyfriend worked on removing the battery from the Jeep. After a late start, we finally arrived at Holly Oaks, and it was cold.

I quickly made a lap around the vendors, as being outside wasn't appealing with the wind. I said hi to the guys at Lake and Trail Accessories before heading back to the Jeep. I didn't air down since I was alone, so I just put the flag on and entered the park. I drove around, sticking to the main roads, and headed back to the large water hole where vehicles often get stuck. Fortunately, no one was there this time. After a bit of driving, we decided to head home. It was a slow day, but I didn't want to get into anything serious without another vehicle. Still, it was a successful day because I was glad the Jeep needed a new battery now rather than later, especially with a trip to West Branch planned for the end of the month.

The Autoshow and Ford Racing Days

Sunday was spent in downtown Detroit. First, we visited the Autoshow at Huntington Center. My boyfriend and I met up with my dad and sister to explore the show. We started at the Gallery, where exotic and super luxury cars are displayed. My sister has a particular love for Porsches.

Next, we wandered through the GM exhibit, mainly checking out the model of the Cadillac Formula One car and the Cadillac CT4. After that, we moved to the Ford exhibit, where my sister searched for Red Bull Racing merchandise. Unfortunately, there wasn't much available, mostly Ford Racing and Bronco items. However, I did get to see the Red Bull Raptor on display.

We then explored the Chrysler exhibit before heading to the Michigan Overland display. This display featured vehicles from Ford, GM, Jeep, Ram, Subaru, and Toyota, all outfitted with ARB products. I wish some members from the Michigan Overland group had been present, as it was named after them. After that, we checked out the Grand Prix display, where Ford showcased a few more Mustangs, along with a couple of Grand Prix and a Le Mans car.

Afterward, we went downstairs to view the Modded Detroit cars in the basement. We grabbed some food at the concessions before heading to Michigan Central.

Ford Racing Days took place at Michigan Central, the new Ford Headquarters building. It was fantastic to see the train station restored, as it is such an iconic landmark in Detroit. However, I wish the Racing displays had more to offer, and there were only four racing simulators available. There were a few Mustangs, the new Formula One car for Team Red Bull, and two other cars on display.

We also took a brief walk through the history of Ford Racing, which included a segment on women in racing.

After a quick walk through the displays, my sister got in line for the racing simulators. Not wanting to wait around, my boyfriend and I decided to head home. I wish there had been a bit more at Michigan Central because it only took about an hour to see everything, and the line for the racing simulators was quite long for just four machines.

Reflections on the Weekend

Overall, it was a long weekend, and I was grateful to have Monday off to catch up on my usual weekend chores. I wish I could have met up with someone at Winterfest, but given how my morning went, I was also glad I didn't have anyone waiting for me. The Autoshow featured Jeep, Bronco, and EV driving experiences, but I skipped them since I have access to those vehicles in my life.

Now, I am preparing for my long weekend in West Branch, coming up for Winterblast, hosted by the Great Lakes Four Wheel Drive Association. I will be sponsoring this event by donating some hats and gift certificates for the website.

In conclusion, this weekend was filled with excitement and opportunities to connect with fellow enthusiasts. I look forward to the upcoming events and the chance to share my passion for off-roading and motorsports.
